The James M. Goode Apartment House Research Collection, 1880-1988, consists of research files, photographic prints, and slides. Research files consists of non-photographic research materials, including original apartment house brochures, blueprints, field notes, and hundreds of newspaper articles. Of particular importance are over 200 articles on American apartment houses that appeared in American architectural magazines between 1870 and 1976. Photographs are of Washington, D.C., appartment houses; American apartment houses outside of Washington, D.C.; and European apartment houses (photographers include James M. Goode, Peter Robinson, James Stafford Phillips, and James Franklin Tetro). The material was created during the years 1978-1988 when Goode and his staff were engaged in research for a major book on the social and architectural history of Washington area apartment houses, 1880-1988. This research was published in Goode's Best Addresses: A Century of Washington's Distinguished Apartment Houses (Washington, D.C.: Smithsonian Institution Press, 1988). The book was republished in 2003 with additions.
